Our Itinerary
Verna and I will be flying in to Chicago a few days earlier to make sure that we are over our jet lag before we head off on our adventure......
Here is our Itinerary after that!!
( though there maybe minor changes )
ROAD TRIP TO SUGAR – Thurs 31st May to Sat 9th June 2012 ITINERARY
Day 1 – Thurs 31st May - Chicago 8.00 am -
Meet and Greet in Breakfast room of Holiday Inn Express Rosemont. We will enjoy a leisurely breakfast prior to boarding our bus for downtown Chicago and the beginning of our Chicago adventure including among other things Navy Pier to check out the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, to Millennium park where you can discover the amazing Cloud gate, Crown Fountain, breathtaking Lurie garden and enjoy a relaxing lunch before returning to our hotel
Day 2 – Friday 1st June – Shipshewana Indiana.
Depart Chicago for our drive to the delightful Amish town of Shipshewana Indiana where we will spend the day wandering into Lolly’s and Yoder’s quilt stores, have a famous JoJo’s pretzel or hotdog in the Davis mercantile building check out the many quaint gift, craft and antique stores. Maybe take a town tour in an Amish buggy, check out the bakery for a few sweet treats to eat on the bus while we are on our way to Conner Prairie, Indianapolis before heading to the Blue Gate Restaurant for our 6pm Amish dinner booking. Time to catch a show in the Blue Gate Theatre for those interested
Day 3 – Saturday 2nd June – Indianapolis Indiana. Depart Shipshewana for our drive to Connor Prairie (entrance fee included) on the outskirts of Indianapolis where our Civil War journey into the 1863 raid on Indiana begins. For those brave enough, at $15US and if weather conditions permit, a balloon ride may be an option or you may just wander the grounds and explore.
Day 4 – Sunday 3rd June – Indianapolis /Grand Rivers, Kentucky/ Paducah, Kentucky.
Depart Indianapolis for our drive to Grand Rivers. Grand Rivers is on the Finger Lakes and is an art and theatre community. Lunch at Patti’s 1880 restaurant is a ‘must have’ and is the home of the best pies in Kentucky. An hour or two to stroll the quaint galleries, antique stores (I have found 3 wonderful antique quilts in this town – Sharon) and gift shops before our 30 minute drive into Paducah will help us feel less guilty about the huge piece of pie and a trip to Wal-Mart Superstore is an option for those who don’t need an early night.
Day 5 – Monday 4th June – Paducah Kentucky/St Louis Missouri.
Pick up 9am for a visit to the Floodwall Murals showing the history of Paducah before heading to the National Quilt Museum for our guided tour. From there it is a short walk to Bryer Patch Studio where we will be met by Caryl Bryer Fallert, given a tour of her home and studio including lunch in her kitchen and a 1 hour lecture - Inspiration and the Creative Process. From there we will board the bus for the short trip to Hancocks Fabric Store before heading off on our drive to St Louis. Evening free in St Louis.
Day 6 – Tues 5th June – St Louis
Pick up for trip to the Gateway Arch. Pick up for trip to Union Station and lunch at the Union Station Mall. An optional trip to the Budweiser beer brewery is offered for those not wanting to have free time before we depart on our Mississippi River Dinner Cruise. (Dinner cruise Included) Cruise commences at 7pm and we return to the wharf at 9.30pm to be met by our bus and returned to our hotel.
Day 7 – Wed 6th June – St Louis/Columbia/St Joseph
depart St Louis for our drive to Columbia Missouri and the home of Statler. After a short meet and greet at Statler we will have a quick lunch before heading off to St Joseph. We will be leaving Saint Louis a little earlier than planned as we need to arrive in Columbia for our quick visit to Statler before we now drive to the delightful Amish town of Jamesport for a late lunch. Lots to see and do in Jamesport.
Day 8 – Thurs 7th June – St Joseph to Lincoln Nebraska
Depart St Joseph for our drive to Lincoln Nebraska and our visit to the National Quilt Study Centre Museum (entrance fee included). Tractor Museum a block away for the gents if they prefer. Visit to the Cosmic Cow quilt store after our museum visit.
Day 9 Fri 8th June – Lincoln to Kansas City
Depart Lincoln for Kansas City. First stop is Mission Road Antique Mall (About 7 or 8 antique quilts from here have found new homes at the Brown household). Following lunch we will visit the steamboat Arabia Museum before a free night in Kansas City.
Day 10 Sat 9th June – Kansas City to Columbia Missouri
depart for our final drive to Columbia and the start of our exciting few days meeting our Statler Siblings at SUGAR. Our Tour ends at the Holiday Inn Executive Centre Columbia MO.
